YANKEES 6
RED SOX 5

Sunday night in Boston, the Yankees came up with a huge win against the Boston Red Sox, 6-5. The win not only won the series, but was huge for a few reasons. Aside from the obvious fact that the Yankees trail the 1st place Sox, and needed the win to cut into the lead, a few other factors could help turn this season around:
1) The Yankees came back to win the game against Okajima and Paplebon. These two set up and closer combo, has been unhittable. It’s huge the Yankees dented the armor.
2) Mariano Rivera came in and shut down the big men in the lineup, with no problem.
3) A-Rod belted a game winning homerun, in a stadium which had been getting on him all night.
THIS was a game that could turn things around for the Yankees. Everything you could have wanted to happen, happened!! Let’s just hope the Yankees can build on this.
Now…on to game details.

Andy Pettitte pitched well for 4 innings, but ran into trouble in the 5th. Pettitte, who appeared to yell in pain late in the frame, surrendered three consecutive singles to Jason Varitek, Wily Mo Pena and Coco Crisp before finally getting the first out of the inning. Dustin Pedroia followed with a three-run double to left center, clearing the bases. Then, Bobby Abreu misplayed a David Ortiz basehit, and the Yankees found themselves down 5-4 at the end of the 5th.

Offensively, the Yankees also did their job tonight against Josh Beckett. Josh Phelps dribbled a run-scoring single to center in the second inning to open scoring and the Yankees put up three more in the fifth, with A-Rod and Jorge Posada drilling RBI singles. A third run scored when Jeter came in on a Mike Lowell error. After Okijima entered in the 8th, Robinson Cano ripped a triple, scoring Matsui to tie the game at 5. Then in the 9th, Alex Rodriguez hit an opposite field homerun off of Jonathan Paplebon, to put the Yankees ahead for good, 6-5.

Like I stated before, ths was a very big win for the Yankees, and hopefully they can build on this performance. The Yanks will head to Chicago to start a 4 game set against the White Sox.
Here are the probable pitching matchups:
DeSalvo vs Garland
Clippard vs Beuhrle
Wang vs Vazquez
Mussina vs Contreras

GAME NOTES:
A-ROD: 2-5, HR, 2 RBI
CANO: 1-3, RBI
POSADA: 2-5, RBI
