YANKEES 8
TWINS 2

Bobby Abreu drove in four runs and Alex Rodriguez homered for the third consecutive game, backing Carl Pavano’s first victory in nearly two years as the Yankees routed the Twins on Monday, 8-2.

The Yankees blasted Twins starter Sidney Ponson for eight runs in 5 2/3 innings, punctuated by Rodriguez’s Major League-leading fifth home run — a two-run shot to right.

Pavano (1-0) limited the Twins to six hits and two runs in seven innings, striking out two without walking a batter. After Pavano was relived for the 8th inning, the bullpen once again pitched 2 no-hit innings.

Offensively, Bobby Abreu led the way with a 3-5 game, with 1 HR and 4 RBI. Jorge Posada and A-Rod each had 2RBI, and Jeter had a 3-4 night.
The Bombers took a 5-0 lead after two inning of play, and never looked back.
