YANKEES 8
RAYS 4

Sunday afternoon at the Stadium, the Yankees won their final meeting of the year with the Rays, 8-4. Derek Jeter tied Lou Gherig with 1,269 hits at Yankee Stadium, and it came in the form of a home run in the fifth inning.

Carl Pavano pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up four runs — three earned — on five hits. Pavano left the game after landing awkwardly on his left hip (we knew it was only a matter of time).

The Yankees scored early, as they put up 4 runs in the 1st inning. Johnny Damon led off with a line drive to right field, then Derek Jeter laid down a bunt single. Jason Giambi followed and worked a 12-pitch walk before Alex Rodriguez slugged a grand slam over the right-center-field wall.

After the Rays quickly cut the Yankee lead to 4-3, the Yankees came right back in the bottom half of the second inning on a two-run shot to the right-field upper deck from Giambi.

Since the Yankees game did not really mean much in the big scheme of the standings, it was an important afternoon for Derek Jeter. Jeter connected for three hits for the third straight game. He had been drawing closer to Lou Gehrig’s all-time hit record at Yankee Stadium, and it seemed only fitting that Jeter’s hit to tie the legend with 1,269 came in the form of a home run in the fifth inning.
