In Game 1 of todays double header, the Yankees defeated the Devil Rays 7-3. Rookie Shelley Duncan hit his first Major League home run, and the Yankees’ offense erupted in the sixth inning for 5 runs to break a 2-2 tie.
Kie Igawa got the start for the Yankees, and although he only surrendered 2 runs, he looked very shaky. Igawa allowed seven hits and two runs, laboring through five innings and 94 pitches for a no-decision. Both runs came on solo homeruns by the Rays. Relievers Luis Vizcaino and Kyle Farnsworth pitched a scoreless inning apiece to keep the Rays at bay in the sixth and seventh, and Vizcaino picked up his 7th win of the season. (7-2)
Hideki Matsui tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning with a two run homer to right field. Then in the 6th inning, the Yankee offense exploded. Rookie, Shelley Duncan went deep for his 1st ,ajor league homerun. Duncan received a curtain call from an announced crowd of 54,412 after blasting a two-run shot into the left-field stands. The current designated hitter now has two hits and three RBIs in his first two games since being called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The Yankees look to try and take Game 2, tonight, when they pit: Matt DeSalvo against JP Howell.
