YANKEES 8
RAYS 7

Monday night, the Yankees blew a 7-2 lead, but Robinson Cano hit a pinch hit homerun in the 8th, to win the game 8-7. Ian Kennedy pitched well, but after leaving the game due to injury, the bullpen collapsed.

Ian Kennedy allowed eight hits and three earned runs in six-plus innings. In the 7th inning, with a 7-2 lead, Kennedy was drilled by a line drive on his right thigh. The Rays would hit three home runs in the inning off New York relievers to put up a five-run frame and tie the game.

Robinson Cano’s eighth-inning, pinch-hit home run off Al Reyes lifted the Yankees to an 8-7 lead. Earlier, Derek Jeter drove in two runs in his return to the lineup and three Yankees homered to chase Rays starter Andy Sonnanstine, who surrendered solo home runs to Johnny Damon, Alex Rodriguez and Morgan Ensberg. With the 7-2 lead, the game seemed in hand.. until the bullpen collapse (and it wasn’t even Farnsworth this time).
Cano, who did not start tonight, came on for pinch hitting duties, and belted a homerun which proved to be the game winner.

The Yankee lineup was unusual, as it included: Moeller, Ensberg, and Gonzalez. The injury bug has bitten the Yanks hard in the early season, so they must continue to fight through it.

DAMON: 2-5, HR, 3RBI
