YANKEES 14
ANGELS 9
Sunday afternoon at the stadium, the Yankees earned a split of the series by winning a wild one against the Angels, 14-9. Xavier Nady drove in a career high 6 runs, helping the Yankees come back on two seperate occasions in this game.
Darrell Rasner had a horrible outing for the Yankees, and may have pitched himself out of the starting rotation. Rasner went 4 innings, giving up 5 earned runs, on 7 hits, while walking 3 batters. Dan Giese pitched 3 innings in relief for Rasner, gave the Yankees 3 scoreless innings to allow the Yankees to make their first comeback of the game.
Unfortunately, after the Yankees took a 8-5 lead, Edwar Ramirez gave up a grand slam to give the Angels the lead yet again, 9-8.
Offensively, Xavier Nady had a career high 6 RBI’s in the game. Ivan Rodriguez hit his first homerun of the season. Trailing 5-0, the Yankees
came back on Lackey to cut the lead to 5-4.
The Yankees then put together a four-run rally in the seventh against Jose Arredondo, opening as center fielder Gary Matthews lost Derek Jeter’s fly ball for a two-base error. Abreu tied the game with a single to left-center, and Alex Rodriguez followed with a hit under Chone Figgins’ glove at third base. After an out, Nady belted the home run to give Yankees their first lead of the afternoon.
The second comeback came with the Yankees trailing 9-8 in the 8th inning, when Justin Christian was pinch running for Ivan Rodriguez. Christian reached 2nd base on a booted ground ball. After that, Christian stole 3rd base, and Angels catcher Jeff Mathis threw the ball into left field, allowing Christian to score the tieing run. Damon and Abreu walked before Alex Rodriguez hit a sharp ground ball to third base that Figgins couldn’t handle, allowing Melky Cabrera to score the go-ahead run on the error.
Xavier Nady added another RBI single, and the Yankees would go on to win 14-9.
The Yankees earned a split of the 4 game series against the AL leading Angels, and will now go on a long road trip, starting on Monday in Texas.
