YANKEES 4
BLUE JAYS 1

Wednesday night in Toronto, the Yankees picked up their 8th straight win, by defeating the Blue Jays, 4-1. Mike Mussina pitched 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball in his return to the rotation. Helped out by some great defense by Robinson Cano, Mike Mussina picked up his first win since Aug. 11 at Cleveland.

Mike Mussina limited Toronto to five hits and three walks, striking out one before yielding a two-on, two-out situation to reliever Edwar Ramirez in the sixth inning. Mussina only had a pitch count of 87, and wanted to go further, but Joe Torre called on the bullpen. Joba Chamberlain came into the game in the 7th, and pitched the 8th inning. Alex Rodriguez made a throwing error, leading to a run, which was Joba’s first run given up in the major leagues (although it was not an earned run).

Offensively, the Yankees put up some early runs in the first inning. After Bobby Abreu and Alex Rodriguez walked, Hideki Matsui — fighting a 2-for-31 skid — came through with a run-scoring single to left, just his second RBI in 29 at-bats to open September. In the fourth, in the fourth, Robinson Cano came through with a line drive single to left-center field, scoring Matsui and Jorge Posada.

The Yanks will go for their 9th straight win, and a sweep of Toronto on Thursday night when Ian Kennedy faces AJ Burnett.

GAME NOTES:
MUSSINA: 5.2 IP, 5H, 0ER, 3SO
CANO: 1-4, 2 RBI
MATSUI: 1-2, RBI
