YANKEES 6
BLUE JAYS 1

Wednesday Night at the Stadium, the Yankees won their 5th straight game by defeating the Toronto Blue Jays, 6-1. The win moved the Yankees within seven games of the division-leading Red Sox and six back of the AL Wild Card lead.

Roger Clemens limited the Blue Jays to one run over six innings, but scattered nine hits and walked a batter. Clemens struck out three and was touched only in the first inning of his 99-pitch effort, surrendering a one-out triple to Alex Rios and a run-scoring single to Troy Glaus. The Rocket seemed to get out of big jams all night long with the double play ball.
Clemens received a “No-Decision”, because the Yankees could not score while he was in the game. Mike Myers got the win, and Mariano Rivera the save.

After being limited to two hits through the first six innings by Shaun Marcum — including double plays in three consecutive innings — the Yankees came alive in a huge seventh inning. Jeter started things off with a single, follwed by another single by Bobby Abreu. A-rod came up next, and belted a double off of the wall, to score both runners and give the Yankees the 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, Andy Phillips came through with a two-run, bases-loaded single to left off reliever Brandon League, the third Toronto pitcher. Jorge Posada added a run-scoring hit in the eighth off League, and Robinson Cano smacked another RBI single to give the Yankees a four-run lead.

The Yankees will return to action on Thursday afternoon, when they go for the important 4 game sweep of Toronto. Chien-Ming Wang will face Dustin McGowan.
