YANKEES 8
RAYS 4
Wednesday night in St. Petersburg, the Yankees took their second straight from the Tampa Bay Rays, 8-4. The Yankees are now deciding to win games… a little late..as they still remain 7 games behind the Wild Card spot. Carl Pavano struggled a bit, but Alex Rodriguez hit a homerun, and drove in 4 runs, while having the first ever use of instant replay used to review his homerun.
Carl Pavano got the start for the Yankees, but only lasted 4 innings. Pavano allowed 3 runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out one. Edwar Ramirez picked up the win in relief as he came in the with the bases loaded, and got out of the jam by getting adouble play and a pop up. The bullpen was impressive, as left-hander Phil Coke, making his second big league appearance, tossed two scoreless, hitless innings.
The Yankees jumped on top in the 2nd inning, taking advantage of unusual bad fielding by the Rays. Eric Hinske missed a second-inning Robinson Cano drive that popped out of his glove for an RBI double, then misplayed two-base hits by Bobby Abreu and A-Rod in New York’s three-run third.
Ivan Rodriguez, Jason Giambi and Hideki Matsui also had run-scoring hits for the Yankees. Alex Rodriguez added a late homerun, but caused a bit of controversey. A-Rods homer went off of the catwalk, and the Unpires decided to review the homerun. This was the first official use of Instant Replay in the MLB. The result of course was a homerun, which gave the Yankees a 5 run lead at the time.
The Yankees will go for the sweep of the 1st place Rays on Thursday when they send Darrell Rasner to the mound.
