YANKEES 8
TWINS 0
Tuesday Night at the Stadium, the Yankees shut out the Twins, 8-0. Behind a dominant performance from Chien-Ming Wang, and some offensive support, the Yankees played a complete all around game.
Wang (8-4) pitched 7 innings of shutout ball, walking four and striking out three in a 101-pitch performance to log a team-leading eighth victory. “He bore down and really made pitches when he needed to,” Posada said. “Ground-ball outs. Even when he’s not well, his sinker is so difficult when he keeps it down.” An even bigger positive came in the 9th inning, when rookie right-hander Edwar Ramirez made his debut, by striking out all 3 Twins batters to end the game.
Offensively, Robinson Cano had a nice day, including in the fourth inning when he belted a two-run homer, giving the Yanks a 3-0 lead. In the 6th inning, the Yankees batted around in a five-run inning that chased Minnesota’s Carlos Silva. Matsui doubled and scored on an Abreu single, and after Cano was hit by a pitch, Melky Cabrera stroked a run-scoring single. Derek Jeter drove in another run, his second RBI of the night and part of a three-hit game, to complete the barrage.
The Yankees will go for 3 in a row Wednesday afternoon on Independence Day, as Mike Mussina will face the always tough Johan Santana.
