YANKEES 3
ANGELS 4

Sunday afternoon, the Yankees were swept by the Los Angeles Angels, 4-3. Chone Figgins hit a slow ground ball, which bounced about 10 times before leaving the infield, to drive in the game winning run in walk-off fashion. First base replacement, Wilson Betemit, ran to cover first base instead of going to get the ground ball, which allowed the ball to leave the infield and score the winning run. Andy Pettitte pitched well in the game, but the Yankees once again failed to get runners in from 3rd base.

Andy Pettitte gave the Yankees a solid start, allowing three runs over seven innings. Pettitte gave up 10 hits, while striking out 3 batters, but only allowed the Angels to score in the 3rd inning. Demaso Marte came in relief in the 8th inning, and pitched a scoreless 8th, however, he put runners on 1st and 2nd in the 9th inning. Mariano Rivera came in with the runners on base, to try to save the Yankees….but the slow grounball on his first pitch to Figgins, was all that would occur.

Offensively, the Yankees were very sloppy, and couldn’t cash in. In the first inning, the Yankees scored two runs — but quite easily could have scored at least two more. Bobby Abreu was on third base when Xavier Nady hit a sharp ground ball to third base, where Figgins fielded and fired home. He threw high, but Abreu tried to run around catcher Mike Napoli instead of sliding or barreling through him, and Napoli applied an awkward tag.
In the fourth inning, the Yankees left two more runners on base — one of them in scoring position. And then in the eighth, Napoli gunned down Rodriguez attempting to steal third base with one out. A-Rod appeared ot be safe, however, baseball logic tells you to not attempt to steal 3rd base with 1 out in that situation.

The Yankees have now wasted their post-All Star game streak, and have now fallen all the way back to 8.5 games behind the 1st place Rays, and 4 games behind the Wild Card Red Sox.

The Yankees will now start a set of 3 games with the Minnesota Twins, which are also ahead of the Yankees in the Wild Card Race. Sidney Ponson will take the mound for the Yankees on Monday.

GAME NOTES:PETTITTE: 7IP, 10H, 3ER, 3SO
AROD: 2-3, RBI
ABREU: 1-4, RBI
