YANKEES 5
RED SOX 0

Thursday Afternoon at the Stadium, the Yankees completed a sweep of the Boston Red Sox with a 5-0 win. The victory gave the Yankees a 3 game sweep of the Sox, and pulled them to within 5 games of the division lead, and gave the Yanks a 1 game advantage over the Mariners for the Wild Card spot.

Chien-Ming Wang pitched a great game today, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Wang pitched seven innings, giving up 0 runs and only 1 hit, while striking out 5. Joba Chamberlain pitched a scoreless 8th inning, but was then ejected in the 9th inning for “throwing at” Kevin Youkilis.

Offensively, Robinson Cano was the story of the day. Cano hit 2 solo homeruns, to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead, which was all they would need. Bobby Abreu added an RBI double off Hideki Okajima in the eighth, and then when attempting to steal 3rd base, Jason Veritek threw the ball away, allowing Abreu and Arod to score. Derek Jeter went 4-4 in the game.

With the sweep, the Yanks pull to within 5 games of Boston, and have taken a 1 game lead in the Wild Card race over Seattle. The Yankees will now face Tampa Bay in a 3 game series. Phil Hughes will take the mound in game 1.

GAME NOTES:
WANG: 7IP, 1H, 0 ER, 5 SO
CANO: 2-3, 2HR, 2RBI
