YANKEES 8
MARINERS 2

On Sunday at the Stadium, the Yankees completed a sweep of the Seattle Mariners, 8-2. Darrell Rasner was just what the Yankees needed, as he stepped into the starters spot, and gave the Yankees a quality start, pitching six strong innings in his season debut to help the Yankees cruise to victory.

Darrell Rasner gave up a two-out single that was followed by a two-run homer by Adrian Beltre in the first inning. After that, he gave up only three hits in a six-inning effort that included four strikeouts and no walks. the bullpen stayed sharp, with the combination of Ohlendorf, Farnsworth, and Rivera pitching 3 shutout innings.

Offensively, Derek Jeter had a huge day, going 4-5, with an RBI. Jeter now has 7 hits in his last 9 at bats. Bobby Abreu singled home the first Yankees run, and Hideki Matsui hit a ground-rule double to drive home another. Jason Giambi contributed a sacrifice fly before Melky Cabrera slammed his team-leading sixth home run for two more runs, and Robinson Cano followed with a solo shot.
Damon, Jeter, Abreu and Matsui, the top four hitters in the order, were 11-for-18 with six runs scored and four RBIs.

This was a big win for the Yankees, because it gave them a much needed sweep of a series, as well as having Rasner fill in so nocely for Phil Hughes. If Rasner can continue to contribute like this, he may find himself in the permanant rotation.

The Yanks will have a day off on Monday, and then start a series with the Cleveland Indians at the Stadium, when Pettitte faces Carmona in game 1.
