Sunday afternoon at the Stadium, the Yankees defeated the Oakland A’s 2-1, to complete the 3 game sweep. Andy Pettitte pitched a gem, going 8 innings, and striking out 9 for the Yankees. Jason Gimabi went deep, to give the Yankees the win.
Andy Pettitte worked eight innings, giving up four hits with no walks, while striking out 9 batters. The lone run Pettitte gave up came in the sixth. Pettitte struck out five of the first 11 hitters in the 114-pitch outing. Mariano Rivera came in and pitched a coreless 9th to save the victory, which ended on Jose Molina throwing out Rajai Davis attempting to steal second for the final out.
The Yankees got on the board in the third inning on Alex Rodriguez’s sacrifice fly, which scored Derek Jeter. With the game tied 1-1 in the 6th inning, Jason Giambi drille d aline-drive homerun to right field to give the Yankees the go ahead run 2-1, which was all the Yanks would need.
The Yankees have won seven straight at home and eight of its last 11 overall. The Yanks will now start a series at the Stadium, against the Minnesota Twins. Sidney Ponson will take the mound for the Yankees.
