YANKEES 7
DEVIL RAYS 3
Thursday Night in Tampa, the Yankees started the seocnd half of the season with an impressive 7-3 win over the Devil Rays. The Yankees roughed up Rays starter James Shields, scattering nine hits off of the righty and forcing his exit after six runs (five earned) and six innings.
Yankees starter Andy Pettitte looked sharp early in pitching 5 2/3 innings and picking up his fifth win of the season. Pettitte got into trouble a few times, but pitched his way out of the jams, and also got some solid defensive help. Melky Cabrera jumped the wall in center field to make a great catch, saving a potential run. Pettitte gave up 3 earned runs, on just 6 hits, and struck out 4.
Offensively, the Yankees went yard quite a few times. Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez homered in consecutive at-bats in the fourth to make the score 3-1, and before the frame was finished, Bobby Abreu added his own long ball to extend the lead to three. Alex Rodriguez’s homer was his 31st of the season and the 495th of his career. A Jorge Posada double in the following inning scored Hideki Matsui, who had also doubled to lead off the inning.
The victory, brought the Yankees record to .500 (43-43) on the season. If they are going to make any playoff push…the run must start here!!
Yankees will play game 2 of the set tomorrow night, pitting: Roger Clemens vs Scott Kazmir.
