Friday night at the Stadium, the Yankees opened up the 2nd half of the season with a 7-1 beating of the Oakland Athletics. Mike Mussina continued his consistant pitching, and the Yankee offense finally joined the party.
Mike Mussina (12-6) worked six innings of one-run ball, scattering nine hits to pick up his 12th victory. Mussina walked none for the second straight start and struck out six. The bullpen continued to shut down opponents, as the combination of Robertson, Ramirez and Hawkins pitched 3 innings of no-hit ball.
Offensively, the Yankees cranked out 7 runs on 10 hits. Robinson Cano and Alex Rodriguez each homered on the night. New Yankee Richie Sexson, started his Yankee career in style as he drove in the first run of the game on a basehit. Robinson Cano a three-run homer in the bottom of the third, his seventh of the season, and Derek Jeter scored from first base on Bobby Abreu’s double in the 5th inning. A-Rod added an RBI single, and then later would tack on a solo homerun.
The Yankees will play game 2 on Staurday as they send Joba CHamberlain to the mound.
