YANKEES 6
RAYS 1
Monday night, the Yankees rounded out their opening home stand with a 6-1 victory over the Rays, which gave them a 2 game series split. Mike Mussina pitched a strong six innings to earn his first win of the season, while Bobby Abreu homered (while almost hitting for the cycle) and Alex Rodriguez and Hideki Matsui each drove in runs.
Mike Mussina looked good last night, pitching six innings — needing only 82 pitches to do it — and allowed just one run on two hits, while striking out 3. Mussina went often to his curve ball, which led to 11 ground ball outs.
I threw it a lot, and I could throw it for strikes,” Mussina said. “I could dump it in slow or throw it hard in the ground for strikeouts. I just made pitches when I had to.”
Offensively, Bobby Abreau was the story as he almost hit for the cycle. Abreu only missed a double, as he hit a single, triple, and homerun. Abreu hit a 2 run homer in the first inning to get the Yankees jump started, and in the 7th inning, with a chance to go for the cycle, Abreu walked. After the walk, Matsui and Robinson Cano followed with RBI singles, breaking open what once had been a close game. Anchoring the middle of the lineup, those two, along with A-Rod and Abreu, drove in all six of the team’s runs.
The bad news for the day, came when Derek Jeter was injured running to first base. Jeter strained his left quadriceps, and had to be lifted from the game. There is yet ot be any word on the seriousness of the injury.
The Yankees will head on the road to Kansas City, and take on the Royals, which are off to a hot start. On the mound will be, Phil Hughes to open the series.
