YANKEES 8
ORIOLES 5

Monday night at the Stadium, the Yankees defeated the Orioles 8-5, to pull within 3 1/2 of the Wild Card. Phil Hughes allowed two runs early, but recovered to keep give the Yankees enough to give them the win.

Hughes allowed two runs early, settled down to retire 16 of his next 18 batters, then gave way to the bullpen after loading the bases with two outs in the sixth. Edwar Ramirez came on to strike out Melvin Mora to keep the Yankees on top.

With the Yankees trailing 2-0, Doug Mientkiewicz tied the game with a two-run single in the second, and Hideki Matsui untied it an inning later with a solo homer. The blast was Matsui’s first in 122 at-bats and only his third extra-base hit of September. Six Yankees drove in runs, pushing them across over five separate innings, including Matsui, ARod, Damon, Abreu, Cano and Mientkiewicz.

The Yankees victory, coupled with the Red Sox loss to the Blue Jays, pulled the Yankees within 3 1/2 of Boston for the AL East lead.
Yankees will pit Mike Mussina against Jon Leicester.
