YANKEES 11
METS 8

Saturday afternoon at the Stadium, the Yankees beat the Mets, 11-8. The Yankees pounded out 11 runs on 15 hits, and now have won 10 of their last 11 games.

Starting pitching today was ineffective for both teams. Tyler Clippard only went 3.1 innings, giving up 5 runs on 5 hits, and walked 3. The performance ensured that his next assignment will come for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. Most likely, look for Kei Igawa to be called back up to join the rotation in the next few days (or hours).

Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez led the Yankees’ charge with each hitting two-run homers, and six different players drove in runs. Miguel Cairo had another solid day filling in with a two-hit, two-RBI performance, while Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrera also had run-scoring hits.

“The fans get into it when you’re playing in New York,” Jeter said. “You hear about it everywhere you go, on the streets — Mets fans telling you how bad you are, Yankees fans telling you that you need to win. It’s probably as close as you can get [to the postseason].”

The Yankees will look to win yet another series by taking the rubber game of the series Sunday night when they throw Chien-Ming Wang against “ex-yank” El Duque Hernandez.

GAME NOTES:
CLIPPARD: 3.1 IP, 5 H, 5 ER
JETER: 4-5, HR, 2 RBI
A-ROD: 2-4, HR, 2 RBI
MATSUI: 2-5, 2 RBI
CAIRO: 2-5, 2 RBI
