Although the Yankees stance on contract extensions has always been “We do NOT extend or re-negotiate contracts during the season”, Alex Rodriguez’s outstanding performance for the Yankees this year appears to have changed the organization’s thinking when it comes to discussing contract issues in-season.
A-Rod’s current contract allows him to opt out after this season to become a free agent, forfeiting the final three years and approximately $81 million. The key sticking point for the Yankees in the prospective negotiations is that Rodriguez agree not to opt out of his current contract after this season and agree to add any extension to the current contract, which expires after the 2010 season.
The 31-year-old Rodriguez leads the big leagues with 30 home runs and 86 RBIs, and is batting .317. Not only is he having a great year as far as the numbers go, but when thinking long-term, barring any MAJOR injury, he will break whatever Homerun record that Barry Bonds sets. This will also be extra money in the pockets of the Yankees when this happens.
