Rumor has it that the Yankees offered a five-year deal in the neighborhood of $80 million, to A.J. Burnett, who became a free agent when he opted out of his contract with the Blue Jays on Thursday.

Burnett will turn 32 in January, having gone 18-10 with a 4.07 ERA for the Blue Jays this past season. He led the American League with 34 starts and 231 strikeouts, fanning 9.39 batters per nine innings.

I think that the Burnett would be a decent pickup for the Yankees, however, I think he is a bit overrated. A 4.07 ERA isn’t Cy Young stuff, that everyone makes him out to be. People in NY think he is so great, because he always pitches great against the Yankees. Now that he won’t get those 5-6 starts per year against the Yankees…that ERA may go up a bit.

Either way, it’s a good offer, coming days after the CC Sabathia offer, which shows the Yankees are being very aggressive looking to solidify their pitching rotation. The Yankees also are rumored to be interested in maybe making a trade for Jake Peavy.

STAY TUNED..the fun is just beginning!!
