Tuesday night, the Yankees dropped an 11 inning game to the Rays, 2-1. After a strong outing by Chien-Ming Wang, and a game tying homerun by Hideki Matsui in the 9th inning, the Yankees fell short, when Mariano Rivera gave up a game winning basehit in the 11th.

Chien-Ming Wang pitched another great game for the Yankees, but got absolutely no support from the offense. Wang pitched 7 innings, giving up only 1 run on 7 hits, while striking out 2. Chamberlain and Farnsworth gave up 0 runs in an inning each, before handing the game to Mariano Rivera in the 10th. Rivera got out of the 10th scoreless, but gave up the game winning single in the bottom of the 11th. This was the first loss for Rivera this season, and the first run given up by Rivera all season long.

Offensively, the Yankees only had 6 hits all night, and were held scoreless by Jackson all night, In the 9th inning, Hideki Matsui hit a solo homerun off of reliever Troy Percival for the only run, which tied the game.

The Yankees will play game 2 of the set on Wednesday when Mike Mussina takes the mound.
