YANKEES 0
MARINERS 3

Friday night in Seattle, the Yankees fell to the Mariners, 3-0. After seeing that the Red Sox lost their game earlier in the night to Baltimore, the Yanks had a chance to gain some ground, but their bats were quieted by Jarrod Washburn.

Darrel Rasner (1-2) pitched a decent game for the Yankees, although only going 5 innings, he was touched for seven hits, including a two-run homer in the fourth inning by Seattle catcher Kenji Johjima, in a 78-pitch effort. He walked three and struck out one. Although not a great game, it would usually be enough to win a game with the Yankee offense.

However, the Yankees bats were quieted. The Yankees managed just six hits in eight scoreless innings against Washburn. Jorge Posada had two of the Yankees six hits, and Derek Jeter extended his hitting streak to seven games with a fifth-inning single. Other than that… nothing.

The Yankees will play game two of the series Saturday night, throwing Matt DeSalvo (0-0) vs Miguel Batista (3-2). Maybe this time, Joe Torre will actually allow a starter to stay in the game past the 7th inning, when they are pitching a GEM and only a 70 somethign pitch count.

GAME NOTES:

RASNER: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R
JETER: 1-3
POSADA: 2-4
