YANKEES 5
TIGERS 8
Thursday Night at the Stadium, the Yankees dropped their 3rd straight game, 8-5 to the Detroit Tigers. Mike Mussina had another bad outing, including giving up a Grand Slam to Carlos Guillen in the first inning.
Mike Mussina gave up 6 runs in the first two innings of this ballgame, including the Grand Slam in the first inning. Mussina was charged with seven runs (six earned), allowing nine hits while walking two and striking out two while losing for the first time since July 20.
Offensively the Yankees did not put up much of a fight, until the 9th inning. The Yankees chipped away with a run in the first inning and two in the third, as Hideki Matsui stroked an RBI single and Abreu connected on a two-run homer, his 24th. Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada both drove in runs in the 9th, to make the Yankees pull within 8-5, but that was as close as they would get.
Friday nights matchup pits Andy Pettitte against Nate Robertson.
The Yankees must stop this losing skid, before the playoffs chances slip back away.
GAME NOTES:
MUSSINA: 5IP, 9H, 6ER, 1SO
ABREU: 2-5, HR, 2 RBI
JETER: 2-4
MATSUI: 3-5, 2 RBI
