Yankees 2
Royals 5

Tuesday afternoon, the Yankees fell to the Kansas City Royals, 5-2. Phil Hughes was knocked out early by Royals bats, while Jorge Posada was knocked out of the game with an injury.

Phil Hughes walked four and struck out two in the 87-pitch outing, in which he gave up 6 hits and 3 earned runs in only 3 innings. Hughes worked himself into trouble often, not being able to spot his fastball. In relief, Ross Ohlendorf did not do any better, givng up 2 runs.

Offensively, it was a nightmare for Alex Rodriguez, as he struck out 4 times (just the fourth time he has done so his Major League career). Wilson Betemit also added 3 strike outs, and the Yankees only manged to score 2 runs, both in the 2nd inning off starter Brian Bannister in the second inning, on run-scoring hits by Wilson Betemit and Johnny Damon.

To make matters worse, and add to the injured list of the Yankees, Jorge Posada had to leave the game with “a dead right shoulder”. Posada will have his dead right shoulder checked on Wednesday and is not expected to play, along with Derek Jeter, who is also sidelined for the series in Kansas City.

The wounded Yanks will take on the Royals in game 2 of the set on Wednesday, when the Yanks will send out Ian Kennedy to the mound.
