YANKEES 2
OAKLAND 1

Friday night, the Yankees return home to the Stadium to face the Oakland A’s, after a horrible road trip in which they went 1-7. The Yanks beat Oakland 2-1, behind a strong pitching performance by Mike Mussina.

Mike Mussina (4-5) pitched a gem for the Yankees, going 7 innings, giving up only 1 run on 6 hits, and striking out 3 Athletics. “I just feel like I have my feet under me better on the mound and that I know where the ball is going, and I have confidence in my stuff,” Mussina said. “I’ve been out there for the last month or so, doing a pretty decent job and feeling decent about the way I’ve been throwing the ball. I think things are improving; I just want to throw the last three months of the season the way I threw [in] June. Rivera stuck out three A’s as he pitched 1 1/3 innings for his 10th save of the season and a milestone win for Torre.

Offensively, the Yankees did not do much. The Yanks scored 2 in the first inning, an dnever put anothe rmark on the scoreboard. Alex Rodriguez hit an RBI double and Jorge Posada drove in A-Rod with a single. A-Rod went 3-for-3.

Game 2 of the series will be Saturday afternoon at the Stadium, pitting: Kei Igawa vs Chad Gaudin.

GAME NOTES:
MUSSINA: 7 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 3 SO
A-ROD: 3-3, RBI

CANO: 2-4
