YANKEES 6
MARINERS 5
Sunday Afternoon at the Stadium, the Yankees came from 5-2 down in the 8th inning, to rally for a 6-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners. The victory was big for the Yankees on a few levels as it was their first come from behind win of the season (when trailing after 7 innings), their 5th straight win, a series sweep, and it pulls the Yankees to a .500 record at 25-25.
Chien-Ming Wang made the start for the Yankees, and ran into trouble in the 7th inning. Wang went 6.1 innings, giving up 5 runs on 7 hits, while striking out 2 batters. Wang gave up 2 runs in the 7th inning, to give the Mariners a 5-2 lead, but on came Edwar Ramirez to shut down the Mariners in relief. Ramirez has still yet to give up a run this season, and continues to be impressive out the bullpen.
Offensively, the Yankees offensive explosion came in the 8th inning while trailing 5-2, when the Yanks put up 4 runs on the board. Bobby Abreu blasted a double to score Derek Jeter to cut the lead to 5-3, and then after an A-Rod walk, Hideki Matsui hit a slow dribbler for an infield hit, and JJ Putz threw the ball away to allow the next run to score, to cut the lead to 5-4. Then Robinson Cano hit a sacrifice fly to score A-Rod, to tie the game at 5-5. Jose Molina then stepped to the plate and bombed a double over the head of Ichiro, to give the Yankees the go ahead 6-5 lead.
Mariano Rivera came in to close the game out for the victory.
The Yankees will start a Memorial Day series in Baltimore on Monday, as the red hot Darrell Rasner will take the mound and look to extend his record to 4-0, and the Yankees winning streak to 6 games.
GAME NOTES:
WANG: 6.1IP, 7H, 5ER. 2SO
