YANKEES 10
RANGERS 1

Tuesday night in Arlington Texas, the Yankees defeated the Rangers, 10-1. The bigger story of the night, was the pitching performance, and injury, of Phil Hughes.

Making his second big-league start, Hughes (1-1) was removed from the game with a leg injury while pitching a no-hitter after 6 1/3 innings. With the Yankees leading, 9-0, Hughes was taken out of the game with one out in the seventh inning with an 0-2 count on Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira. After a pitch to Texiera, Hughes came up limping, in what was to be later determined as a”hamstring injury”. Hughes finished with 83 pitches, 53 of which were strikes. He struck out six hitters and walked three. Phil Hughes is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

Offensively, the Bombers put up some big numbers, scoring two runs in the second inning and four more runs in the third, the final two on a double by Robinson Cano for a 6-0 lead. In the sixth, run-scoring doubles by Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada extended the Yankees’ lead to 8-0. The Yankees would go on to pound out 14 hits, and 10 runs.
Robinson Cano went 4-5, with 3 RBI.

The Yankees return to action Wednesday night in Texas, pitting Andy Pettitte (1-1) vs Robinson Tejeda (3-1).

GAME NOTES:

HUGHES: Pitched incredible, no-hit ball. Hughes showed an example of why he is so highly talked about. Unfortunately, due to injury, we will never know if he would have pitched a no-hitter. (6.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 6K).
CANO: 4-5, 3 RBI
POSADA: 3-4, 2 RBI
