Tuesday Night at the Stadium, the Yankees defeated the Red Sox 5-3 behind a strong outing from Andy Pettitte, and the Yankees bullpen. With the game tied at 3-3 in the 7th, Johnny Damon delivered a 2 run homer to give the Yankees the 5-3 lead. Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera would keep the score right there, and the Yankees pulled to within 7 games of Boston.
Andy Pettitte pitched a strong outing, pitching seven innings of three-run, six-hit ball. Pettitte, who once again stepped up as a stopper, improved to 69-33 in games immediately following a Yankees loss. Pettitte had 6 strike outs and only two walks against one of thebest offenses in baseball.
Joba Chamberlain came in to hold Boston in the 8th inning, and Mariano Rivera pitched a 1-2-3 inning in 9th inning for the save.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the 5th inning, Derek Jeter broke the tie with a solo homerun. Jeter’s homer was his 192nd of his Yankees career, tying him with Tino Martinez for 13th place on the club’s all-time list. After Boston tied the game at 3-3, Johnny Damon hit a 2 run homer in the 7th off of “No Dice-K”. Thats how it would end, a 5-3 victory for the pinstripes.
Wednesday night, Roger Clemens will face Josh Bekett in game 2 of the set.
