YANKEES 5
BLUEJAYS 4

Monday afternoon in Toronto, the Yankees defeated the Blue Jays 5-4.
A four-run sixth inning propelled the Yankees to a 5-4 victory, and puts them tied for the Wild Card spot with the Detroit Tigers.

Yankees starter Andy Pettitte (8-7) allowed three runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings. The Yankees bullpen helped secure Pettitte’s victory by tossing 3 1/3 innings of one-run baseball. Mariano Rivera came in to close the gam ein the 9th inning, to preserve the victory.

The Yankees were trailing, until the 6th inning, when their bats woke up. Designated hitter Hideki Matsui hit an RBI single to center to cut the Jays’ lead to 3-2. Two batters later, second baseman Robinson Cano doubled home two more runs and gave the Yankees a lead they would never give back.

Game 2 of the series will be Teuday night in Toronto, when the Yankees send out Roger Clemens to face Josh Towers.
