YANKEES 5
TWINS 1
Monday night at the Stadium, the Yankees defeated the Minnesota Twins, 5-1. Roger Clemens picked up win #350, and pitched a dominating performance for the Yankees.
Clemens held the Minnesota Twins to just one run and two hits in a dominating eight-inning performance. “I just feel really blessed. I don’t know any other way to put it,” said Clemens, who walked one and struck out four in a 97-pitch effort. Clemens became the eighth player in history to reach the 350-victory plateau and the first since Warren Spahn did so for the Milwaukee Braves on Sept. 29, 1963.
Offensively, the Yankees broke the game open in the 6th inning with 4 runs. It was a 1-1 game, and Bobby Abreu hot a BOMB to the upperdeck in right field. Melky Cabrera worked a bases-loaded walk to drive in a run, and Derek Jeter brought home two more runs with a single between the shortstop and third baseman.
Unfortunately for the Yankees, in that same 6th inning, Alex Rodriguez suffered a strained left hamstring as he hustled to beat out a potential double-play ball. A-Rod had to leave the game for pinch runner, Miguel Cairo. Rodriguez is scheduled to be re-evaluated on Tuesday, and the Yankees can NOT afford to lose A-Rod for any stretch of time to the DL.
The Yanks will be back in action on Tuesday Night for game 2 against the Twins. Chien-Ming Wang will face Carlos Silva.
GAME NOTES:
CLEMENS: 8 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 4 SO
ABREU: 3-4, HR, RBI
