YANKEES 9
WHITESOX 5

Tuesday night in Chicago, the Yankees defeated the White Sox 9-5. Chien-Ming Wang improved his record to 4-0 on the season, and Bobby Abreu hit a grand slam to give the Yanks the win.

Chien-Ming Wang (4-0), scattered three runs on 10 hits, walking two and striking out five over 105 pitches, before turning the ball over to the bullpen for the seventh. Wang pitched into trouble many times, but managed to pitch out of it. It wasn’t one of his best performances, but he gave the Yankees what they needed. In the bullpen, Kyle Farnsworth gave up another homerun (GEE SURPRISE).

The Yankees put a first-inning run on the board against Contreras when Damon led off the game with a double, moved up on a hit and scored on a Hideki Matsui fielder’s choice. The Yanks added another in the second inning when Giambi clubbed his third home run of the year, a solo shot to left-center field. The big blow of the game came in the seventh inning with the Yanks down 4-2, when Bobby Abreu hit his seventh career grand slam and his first as a Yankee, to give them a 6-4 lead. Johnny Damon added a three-run shot in the 8th to ice the game.

The Yankees will pitch Mike Mussina tomorrow in the 2nd game of the series.
