YANKEES 15
ROYALS 6

Sunday afternoon at the Stadium, the Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals, 15-6. Mike Mussina picked up his 16th win of the season with another solid effort, and the Yankees belted 4 homeruns, including a Jason Giambi Grand-Slam.

Mike Mussina pitched six innings, allowing three runs on six hits while walking none and striking out five. The victory was the 266th of Mussina’s career. Mussina fell into trouble in the 1st inning, giving up 3 runs, but after the Yankees scored 6 in the bottom of the frame, Mike Mussina settled down and pitched nicely. Billy Traber pitched 2 innings, giving up 1 run, and Chris Britton gave up 2 runs in his inning of work.

Offensively, the Yankees belted 4 homeruns. TheYankees sent 10 men to the plate in the first inning against Royals right-hander Brian Bannister, in a six-run frame highlighted by Rodriguez’s 546th career home run, a three-run shot that landed in Monument Park.
Following Rodriguez’s team-leading 28th home run, Nady added his 20th of the season and seventh since joining the Yankees, a solo shot taken the other way to the right-field porch, while Jose Molina tacked on an RBI double and Brett Gardner hustled out a run-scoring triple and the Yankees had a 6-3 lead.

In the second inning when Bannister left after six batters, unable to record an out, Jason Giambi belted a grand slam to right, his second of the season and the 14th of his career, to put the Yankees up 10-3.

The Yankees will now head into a series in Toronto on Tuesday, after having Monday off.
