Sunday afternoon in Cleveland, the Yankees shutout the Indians, 1-0. Chien-Ming Wang pitched a gem, outdueling defending AL Cy Young Award winner C.C. Sabathia, hurling seven scoreless innings and stopping the Yankees winless steak.
Wang (5-0) struck out a season-high nine, one shy of his career high, and only allowed one baserunner to get as far as third base in the effort. Wang continued his undefeated opening to the campaign and finished the month of April 5-0, scattering four hits while walking two in a 113-pitch performance. Wang gave way to Chamberlain and Rivera, which closed the deal for the Yankees.
Offensively, the Yankees didn’t do much to help Wang, as their only run came on a Melky Cabrera homerun in the 5th inning. C.C. Sebathia yelled a few words at Cabrera as he rounded the bases after his homerun, apparently angery at Melky for slowly running the bases. Sebathia did alot of talking the rest of the game, but too bad for him, he lost. Maybe he should learn hw to wear a baseball hat correctly while he is at it.
The Yankees will try to earn a split of the 4 game series on Monday, as Mike Mussina will take the mound.
GAME NOTES:
WANG: 7IP, 4H, 0ER, 9K
CABRERA: 1-3, HR
