Sunday afternoon at the Stadium, the Yankees defeated the Rays 2-0.
Chien-Ming Wang shut out the Rays, and Hideki Matsui provided the offense.

Chien-Ming Wang (2-0), pitched 6 innings, giving up 0 runs, 4 hits, and 6 strike outs. Wang pitched another solid game for the Yanks, but in the 7th inning he ran into a bit of trouble, putting runners on 1st and 3rd with 0 outs. Joba Chamberlain then entered the game, and struck out Aybar on 3 straight pitches, and then caused Shawn Riggins to line into a double play.
After Chamberlain pitched 2 scoreless inning, Mariano Rivera came in and shut the door. The combination of Joba and Mo has to be a great sign to the Yankees, as it seems as if the game is over when the Yankees have a lead late in the game.

Offensively, the Yankees only two runs came on a Hideki Matsui homerun in the 4th inning. The Yankees offense has seemed to come out othe gate, rather slow this season, but hopefully it’s just the cold weather.

The Yankees will look to earn a split of the series Monday night when they pitch Mike Mussina. Hopefully, Mussina can bounce back with a good outing.

GAME NOTES:

WANG: 6IP, 4H, 0 ER, 6 SO
MATSUI: 3-4, HR, 2RBI
CANO: 2-4
