YANKEES 3
A’S 1
Tuesday night in Oakland, the Yankees won a pitchers duel, 2-1. Chen-Ming Wang pitched a gem, going 7.1 innings before being pulled for some reason, but the Yankees held on to win 3-1.
Chien-Ming Wang (7-2) pitched 7 1/3 innings of work, giving up only 1 run on seven hits, while striking out 2 batters. Wang’s best friend was the double-play, as he allowed the leadoff runner on base in his first 7 innings of work, but got out of trouble often with huge double-play balls.
Wang had only 86 pitches in the 8th inning, and retired the first batter of the inning, when Joe Girardi pulled him out of the game. This type of move was straight out of the Joe Torre book, which was uncalled for. You do not pull out a pitcher who only has 86 pitches, and is pitching a gem.
The Yankees scored 2 runs in the first inning, as Derek Jeter worked a one-out walk and moved up on a Bobby Abreu single before scoring on Rodriguez’s hit to center field. Jason Giambi then knocked in the Yankees second run with a single to left, scoring Rodriguez to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead. Melky Cabrera would add an insurance run in the 9th inning, hitting a homerun to right field.
GAME NOTES:
WANG: 7.1IP, 7H, 1ER, 2SO
CABRERA: 1-4, HR, RBI
AROD: 2-4, RBI
GIAMBI: 1-2, RBI
