YANKEES 4
RED SOX 1
Friday night in Fenway, Chien-Ming Wang pitched a complete game, 2 hitter, to defeat the Red Sox, 4-1. Wang had a no-hitter in the 5th inning, but a fly ball went off of Bobby Abreu’s glove, and over the fence for a home run. Wang then retired the rest of the Boston line-up, until giving up a bunt single with 2 outs in the 9th inning to Coco Crisp.
Wang went the distance, pitching 9 innings of 2 hit ball, giving up 1 run, and striking out 3. Wang has gotten off to a great start this season, and is now 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA.
Offensively, Jose Molina continued his hot bat, connecting on 2 doubles, giving him a league leading 6 doubles on the season. Molinas first double, in the 5th, gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead. With the game tied at 1-1, Jason Giambi hit a bomb off of Timlin, to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. The Yanks extended its lead to two runs when Jose Molina stroked his second double of the game, moved up on a bunt and then scored on Melky Cabrera’s sacrifice fly.
The sign of the new coaching era, actually came to light. Joe Torre, who was notorious for his over use of the bullpen, and not allowing a starter to finish a game… has now been replaced by Joe Girardi, who let Wang achieve the complete game. Good Call!!
The Yankees will play Boston on Saturday afternoon at 4:00pm, when Mike Mussina will take the mound.
GAME NOTES:
WANG: CG, 2H, 1ER, 3 SO
MOLINA: 2-4, 1 RBI
