YANKEES 6
ANGELS 7

Monday Night in Anahiem, the Yankees dropped a heartbraker to the Angels, 7-6. Depsite Joe Torre bringing in Kyle Farnsworth in the 8th, the Yankees manged to take the game to extra innings. And after for some reason using Mariano Rivera in the 9th inning, Sean Henn came in to give up the winning run in the 10th.

Phil Hughes held the Angels to just Mathis’ three-run double through his first six innings. In the seventh, Hughes put runners on 1st and 2nd, and Torre called upon Luis Vizcaino. Vizcaino would give up 3 consecutive hits, and left the inning with a 6-4 Yankee defecit.

The Yankees had only managed 2 runs through 5 innings, but Alex Rodriguez hit his Major League-leading 40th home run off Chris Bootcheck in the sixth. With the Yankees trailing, 6-4, in the eighth, Posada came through with his 16th home run, a two-run shot to right off Justin Speier.

For some reason, Torre used Rivera in the 9th inning (he must have thought they were home… Torre falls asleep in the dugout and forgets sometimes), and retired the Angels. However, Torre called upon Sean Henn in the 10th, and he gave up back to back doubles to lose the game 7-6.

The Yankees will face the Angels in Game 2 of the set Tuesday night, when Mike Mussina faces Kelvim Escobar.

GAME NOTES:
HUGHES:
6.1IP, 4H, 5R, 4SO
POSADA: 1-4, HR, 3 RBI
AROD: 3-5, HR, 3 RBI
JETER: 2-4
