YANKEES 2
MARINERS 3

Monday night at the Stadium, the Mariners “stole” a victory from the Yankees, 3-2. Not only did the Mariners come from behind to win the game, but there was a controversal stolen base in the 8th, which lead to the tieing run.

Rookie pitcher Matt DeSalvo looked very impressive, and gave the Yankees a chance to win by pitching seven innings of three-hit baseball. He left the game having thrown just 89 pitches, not to mention he retired the last eight batters he faced. The Mariners tied the game in the eighth against reliever Kyle Farnsworth. Willie Bloomquist stole second base on a questionable call, as it appeared Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano made the tag before Bloomquist’s hands reached the bag. But he was called safe and later scored on a Johjima single to right. After seeing the replays, the runner was CLEARLY tagged out about 3 feet short of the base.

In came Mariano Rivera for the 9th inning, and he gave up a 2 out homerun to Adrian Beltre, which gave the M’s the 3-2 victory. Offensively, the Yankees were held quiet most of the night. Mentkiewicz went 2-4, with an RBI. Bobby Abreu stranded 7 men on base.

GAME NOTES:

DESALVO: DeSalvo pitched a GREAT game, in which he gave up 3 early hits and a run in the 1st inning, and then went on to shut down the Mariners through 7 innings. (7 IP, 3 H, 1 R).
MIENTKEWICZ: 2-4, 1 RBI
POSADA: 2-4
