“Holy Cow” The Scooter, Phil Rizzuto dies at age 89.

He played 13 years with the Yanks collecting the A.L. MVP award in 1950. He also sparked the Yanks to 10 Pennants and 8 World Series Championships, collecting the Babe Ruth Award in 1951 and ending his career with a 5 time All Star. He had to wait 38 years to enter the Hall, he got in from a Veteran Committee vote in 1994.

After his playing days were over, he left the diamond and stepped right into the broadcasting booth, were he would sit for the next 40 years. He had such memorable calls as Roger Maris’ 61st home run and Chris Chambliss’ 1976 ALCS homer. He retired from broadcasting in 1996 and spent 55 years in the Yankee organization.

I will always remember the Scooter from watching WPIX growing up, to his famous cannoli rant at his Hall Of Fame induction, to the cow knocking him over on his day at the Stadium in 1985. And one of the things he will always be remembered for was his fear of lightning.

Ty Cobb named him the “Scooter” in 1953, saying that “He one of the few modern players that could hold his own among the old timers”.

Phil Rizzuto 1917-2007.

      R.I.P. - Scooter!!
My favorite Yankee broadcaster EVER!!! He rooted for the Yankees while on AIR..and I LOVED IT!! The only broadcaster to have the balls to say “C’mon Donnie, we need a hit here” …and then cheer after the hit while on air broadscasting.
Now we have to deal with fools like Michael Kay and John Sterling who sound excited when the other team hits a homerun.
