YANKEES 2
ROYALS 3
Monday afternoon at the Stadium, the Yankees lost 3-2 to the Kansas City Royals to earn a split of the series. Mariano Rivera gave up a homerun in the 9th inning to lose the game, after Mike Mussina pitched a gem.
Mike Mussina gave them one of their best pitched games of the year, completing eight innings and allowing only two runs on 7 hits, while striking out 3 and walking none. Mussina had thrown only 89 pitches after 8 inning, but Girardi passed the ball to Mariano Rivera with the game tied at 2-2 in the 9th inning. Rivera had given up a “go-ahead” homerun a few days earlier, after not giving up one all season long.
The only Yankee offense of the day came on a 2 run homerun by Alex Rodriguez in the 7th inning, to tie the game at 2-2. The Yankees would load the bases in the 9th inning, but Melky Cabrera would ground out to second base to end the game.
The Yankees will now head out on the road and start a 3 game set in Oakland on Tuesday. Chien-Ming Wang will try to end his winless streak when he takes the mound.
GAME NOTES:
MUSSINA: 8IP, 7H, 2ER, 3SO
AROD: 2-4, HR, 2RBI
