YANKEES 2
RANGERS 14

Thursday afternoon at the Stadium, the Yankees could not pull off yet another sweep of the Texas Rangers, as they fell 14-2. A combination of sloppy defense, not so good starting pitching, and even worse relief, lead to the disaster.

One start after almost pulling off a perfect game, Chien-Ming Wang allowed seven runs in 6 1/3 innings. Wang yielded seven runs on 11 hits and a walk over 6 1/3 innings, striking out two. “The last game, the sinker went down,” Wang (1-3) said. “Today, it was more flat.”

The fault can not only be blamed on Wang though. The Yankees defense was very sloppy. In the 5th inning of a 1-1 game, Alex Rodriguez messed up a run down between third base and home. While running after Gerald Laird, A-Rod should have thrown the ball home to Wang, but instead tried to run him down. Laird scored the go ahead run, and the Yankees just collapsed from there. It also didn’t help that the bullpen gave up another 7 runs, and a misplayed ball in the outfield by Miguel Cairo, led to a majority of the runs (including a grand slam).

The Yankees will head to Seattle to start a 3 game set with the Mariners.
Game 1 matchup: Darrell Rasner (1-1) vs Jarrod Washburn (2-3).

GAME NOTES:

WANG: 6.1 IP, 11 H, 7 R, 2K
