YANKEES 7
ORIOLES 1
Sunday afternoon in Baltimore, the Yankees stopped their 2 game slide by beating the Orioles, 7-1. Andy Pettitte once again came up with a win, after Kennedy and Hughes had consecutive loses. Pettitte has been labeled the “stopper”, because he always stops a Yankee losing streak.
Andy Pettitte (3-1), who improved to 23-6 against the Orioles and 14-4 at Camden Yards in his career, had a perfect game through 4 2/3 innings until Jay Payton dribbled an infield single Rodriguez’s way. Pettitte allowed four hits, walked none and struck out five to win his third straight start. Pettitte went 7 inning, giving up 0 runs in the victory.
In the fourth, Bobby Abreu drew a one-out walk, and Rodriguez and Hideki Matsui followed with consecutive run-scoring doubles to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead. Johhny Damon added to the scoring with a 2 run homerun in the 7th inning to give the Yanks a 4-0 lead. Derek Jeter hit a three-run double in the ninth to break the game wide open.
After Pettitte left with a 4-0 lead, there were a few rain delays. Joba Chamberlain enbtered, and put two men on base…and then after the rain delay, Brian Bruney gave up one of Chamberlains runs.
The Yankee will enjoy a long awaited day off, and get back in to action on Tuesady in Chicago against the White Sox. Alex Rodriguez will especially need the day off, as he left with a strained right quadricep.
