Tuesday night at the Stadium, the Yankees shut out the first place Tampa Bay Rays, 1-0. Andy Pettitte was dominant, as he held the Rays scoreless through his 8 innings of work, and Derek Jeter help provide the early offense, and Melky Cabrera went deep to add insurance.
Andy Pettitte pitched a gem, as he threw 8 scoreless innings, and did not get into any trouble. Pettitte finished his night after striking out five batters and walking none, while surrendering 0 runs on 4 hits. Edwar Ramirez came into close things out with a scoreless 9th inning.
Offensively, Derek Jeter came through with a 2 run double in the 3rd inning, to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead. the lead would stay 2-0 in this pitchers duel, until Melky Cabrera added a solo homerun in the 8th inning, to make the score 3-0, which was then followed by another 2 runs on Bobby Abreu and Robinson Cano RBI hits.
The Yankees need desperately to sweep this little 2 game series from the Rays, and got off to a good start. The Yanks are now 7.5 games back, and will play Wednesday afternoon, as they send Sidney Ponson to the mound.
