YANKEES 6
ROYALS 2

Thursday night in Kansas City, the Yankees avoided being swept, by beating the Royals, 6-2. Andy Pettitte had a strong outing, and the offense, lead by Melky Cabrera, finally clicked.

Andy Pettitte threw 92 pitches (58 for strikes) in the effort, scattering five hits while walking two and striking out one. Pettitte also had a signature pick off, and some nice defense in the effort. “It was nice to get back out there and get a good rhythm,” Pettitte said. “I felt like I got locked in. Hopefully I can continue this into my next one.”
Joba Chamberlain came on for the final out of the seventh inning, getting Buck to fly out to left and strand a runner in scoring position, and Mariano Rivera retired the Royals in the 9th to seal the deal.

Offensively, Girardi made a few switches…including moving Melky Cabrera to the number 2 spot. Cabrera got the Yankees’ offense rolling in the third inning when he connected off left-hander John Bale for his second home run of the year, part of a two-RBI night. Alex Rodirguez and Jorge Posada also chipped in with homeruns in the game.

The Yankees avoided the sweep, and now will head into the weekend series in Boston to battle the Red Sox.
