YANKEES 2
ORIOLES 1

Wednesday night, in the Yankee Stadium season finale, the Yankees defeated the Orioles 2-1, which completed the 3 game sweep. Behind Andy Pettitte’s strong pitched game and aHideki Matsui homerun, the Yankees have cut the AL EAST lead down to 1 1/2 games behind the Boston Red Sox.

Andy Pettitte stayed strong into the eighth inning to log his 200th career win and help the Yankees get a series sweep. Pettitte scattered seven hits and struck out four in a 104-pitch performance. Joba Chamberlain entered mid-inning for the first time in his Major League career, striking out Mora to end the eighth. Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth inning for his 30th save, giving Yankee fans heartburn by loading the bases, but getting out of the jam.

Hideki Matsui started the Yankees’ offense in the second inning, with his 25th home run and second in three games. Yankees would scrape together another run in the fifth after Doug Mientkiewicz singled, moved up on a hit and fielder’s choice, then scored on a wild pitch. Thats all the offense for the Yankees on this night, in which pitching stole the spotlight.

The Yankees win, coupled with yet another Red Soxloss, has moved the Yankees to within 1 1/2 games back of the AL EAST lead. The Yankees also took a comanding 5 1/2 game lead over the Detroit Tigers for the Wild Card. The Yanks will now start a 4 game series with the Toronto Blue Jays in Toronto.
