Tuesday night at the Stadium, the Yankees defeated the Texas Rangers, 8-2. With a strong effort from Andy Pettitte, and a big offensive output, the Yanks took game 1 of the set.
Pettitte (2-1) threw seven innings of one-run ball, scattering seven hits and two walks, while strking out four. Andy Pettitte looked very good in his outing, and this time the bullpen didn’t let him down. Scott Proctor and Sean Henn combined to close out the final two innings, giving up just one run.
Offensively, Alex Rodriguez connected for his first May homer and Derek Jeter drove in two runs. Rodriguez’s blast, a two-run shot to right-center field, came off Texas starter Mike Wood in the Yankees’ four-run fourth inning. In the 5th inning, Robinson Cano had an RBI double, and Mientkiewicz capped the Yankees’ fifth-inning scoring with a sacrifice fly.
The Yankees will return to action, Wednesday night pitting Mike Mussina (1-1) vs robinson Tejeda (3-2). The Yankees are currently 4-0 against the Rangers this season.
