It’s clearly apparent (barring a total meltdown) that A Rod is going to get the A.L. MVP this year, but the one thing I have not read anywhere as of yet, is anything substantial about Alex winning a Gold Glove at 3rd base this year.

Since 2001 the man to beat has been Eric Chavez, who’s won 6 in a row at 3rd for Oakland. This season in 84 games, all starting at 3rd, Chavez has 6 errors, 163 assists and has been involved in 15 double plays while posting a .974 fielding percentage.

A Rod this year has been spectacular at third and I haven’t seen too much of Chavez this year but have seen a whole lot of Alex. Last night against the Jays he had two spectacular plays in the field once again. In 89 games this season for the Yanks, 87 of them starting at 3rd, has 5 errors, 160 assists and has been involved in 17 double plays while posting a .979 fielding percentage. Compared to 24 errors last year, it looks like he is finally learned to handle the hot corner.

The Gold Glove race this year is neck and neck so far and if both players keep it up, it appears we are going to have a photo finish. Let’s go Alex, get that Gold Glove out of Oakland for the first time since the 2000 season!
