YANKEES 3
BLUE JAYS 1

Tuesday night in Toronto, the Yankees defeated the Blue Jays, 3-1. Mike Mussina picked up his 19th win, with yet another solid outing. Jason Giambi went deep for the Yankees, but a Red Sox victory over the Indians, mathematically eliminated the Yanks from playoff contention.

Mike Mussina lasted 5 innings, scattering four hits and striking out six in a 73-pitch effort, while walking none. Mussina was struck in the elbow with a line drive in the 4th inning, but toughed it out to get the win, and put him in line to go for his 20th win on the final day of the season. Joba Chamberlain escaped a base loaded jam to keep the game at 3-1, and Mariano Rivera picked up his 38th save of the season.

The Yankees moved ahead 1-0 in the second inning as Jason Giambi singled, moved up on Xavier Nady’s double and scored on a Robinson Cano groundout. Giambi would pad the advantage in the fourth when he connected for his 32nd home run of the year, a solo shot off Litsch.

A third run scored in the seventh when a Litsch offering got away from catcher Gregg Zaun for a passed ball, allowing Cano to slide in safely just ahead of the pitcher’s tag.

The Yankees have been finishing the season strong…although it was a little too late.

GAME NOTES:
MUSSINA:
5IP, 4H, 0ER, 6SO
GIAMBI: 2-4, HR, RBI
