Tuesday night, the Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays, 7-2. Mike Mussina picked up his 17th victory of the season, while Xavier Nady, and alex Rodriguez went deep for the Yankees.
Mike Mussina pitched 6 innings of 2 run ball, as he scattered 10 hits while walking one and striking out eight. Mussina gave up alot more hits than usual, but worked his way out of any trouble, and kept the first place Rays at bay. Damaso Marte came on and allowed a run-scoring single to Aki Iwamura but struck out his next two batters, and Joba Chamberlain — activated from the disabled list earlier in the day — recorded the final out to end the frame before pitching a scoreless eighth inning.
The Yankees got on the board in the 4th inning, when Derek Jeter got an infield single, and the stole second. Jason Giambi would later drive Jeter in on a sac fly. Xavier Nady then hit a 2 run homerun, which was a BLAST off of the catwalk in deep left field.
In the fifth inning, Johnny Damon added an RBI triple, bringing around Robinson Cano, who had reached on a throwing error. Damon scored the Yankees fifth run on Jeter’s RBI groundout. Hideki Matsui tacked on a run-scoring single facing Trever Miller in the sixth, and A-Rod hit his 548th career homer off Jason Hammel in the eighth, tying Mike Schmidt for 12th place on baseball’s all-time list.
The Yankees will try to string together their 3rd straight victory on Wednesday when they send Carl Pavano to the mound.
